Altadena: Lincoln, Woodbury + Fair Oaks (Turn On Your Love Light) • 2023

“You never really leave a place you love…Part of it you take with you. Leaving a part of you behind!”

These newly scanned photos are from a 35mm series of over 100 images I made between 2003-2005 on Lincoln, Woodbury and Fair Oaks in Altadena.

Twelve independent businesses and forty-five homes were eminent-domained for Lincoln Crossing at Woodbury and Lincoln in Altadena. The fallow property-in-waiting, which was initially driven by a community effort to bring a much-needed grocery store in 1983, sat for 20 years by the time the last of the businesses vacated in 2003. Few of the storefronts promised to prioritize locally-owned Black and Brown businesses to serve the West Altadena community materialized and were eventually replaced by chains.

The first five photos below depict where Lincoln Crossing now sits, including Jerry’s Farm (est. 1958) during its last days of over 45 years in business. The series also includes other lost landmarks that were once familiar to many, as well as a few that have since moved or remain - some aging in place and others no longer recognizable.

Note: I will continue adding captions and selections from the series. If you would like to share any knowledge or have questions, please reach out.
